Yesterday, I thought Cavendish might be my favorite part of PEI. After today, that top spot has almost certainly been snatched by Greenwich.
Today, our focus was the northeastern part of the island, starting with the Greenwich section of PEI National Park. Our Airbnb host told us it was her favorite place on the island, and I have to agree - the parabolic dunes, the floating boardwalk, the pristine white-sand beach... even the interpretation centre is impressive. At first, I wasn't sure the gravel hiking trail was anything special, but once it turned into the boardwalk and took us across the surface of the marsh and up into the dunes, I was awestruck. Definitely glad I wore sandals, as the trail really does take you into the sand, and peaks at a breathtaking view of the entire dune system. It felt almost as if we had been transported into another, untouched world that wasn't marred by civilization.
From Greenwich, we drove east to Shipwreck Point Lighthouse and had lunch at the Shipwreck Point Cafe. A simple lobster sandwich, along with some fish and chips, was satisfying and worthy of the recommendation from our host.
To end the day, we pivoted southeast to Souris. Another charming seaside town with a lighthouse greeted us with smiles and sunshine. We stopped to peruse the local shops, then tried to get some chowder at 21 Breakwater but were turned away, so headed back to Charlottetown for dinner along the wharf.
The wharf was humming with activity since there were live musicians, so we grabbed some lobster rolls at Dave's, then escaped to Upstreet Brewing for beer to end the night. No chowder tonight, but we still have one last chance tomorrow before we catch the ferry back to Nova Scotia!
